How Qualcomm and NXP Semiconductors are joining forces to accelerate innovation in IoT and automotive

For more than three decades, Qualcomm inventions have revolutionized the way people communicate, from our early days pioneering CDMA to driving LTE and establishing leadership in 5G today.

As we help make 5G a reality, we’re simultaneously working to develop one of its biggest features: an Internet of Things that brings connectivity and intelligence to billions of devices all over the world. We’re pursuing new opportunities that build on our technology leadership and diligently applying our core smartphone technologies to rapidly expanding adjacent areas such as the IoT and automotive. To that end, we’ve announced our plans to acquire NXP Semiconductors. The acquisition will expand our mobile technology footprint and bolster our position in Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS) and automotive innovation, creating the semiconductor engine for the connected world.

Since our inception, Qualcomm’s primary mission has been to connect people with each other and with things around them. Now we’re connecting people’s worlds and things in them, linking tens of billions of devices—from smartphones to cars and from giant buildings to tiny wearables. To do this, we’re relying on our own engineering leadership, while collaborating with an ecosystem of trusted partners.

By joining forces with NXP, we will build on our connectivity expertise in IoT with NXP’s leadership in microprocessors, security, and sensors to become a leader in broad-based microcontrollers, secure identification, payment cards, and transit applications.

In automotive, we believe that the rapid development of ADAS will be similar to that of the smartphone, where the breadth of the technology is paramount. In this space, NXP is already a key technology driver and a leading semiconductor supplier on a complete solution level. NXP possesses leadership in car infotainment systems, secure car access, and in-vehicle networking and safety. By combining NXP competencies with our experience in computing, connectivity, and multimedia, Qualcomm Technologies (a subsidiary of Qualcomm Incorporated) intends to offer incredibly innovative solutions and lead the way as the world moves to securely connected, fully automated cars.

In addition, NXP’s robust network of global distribution partners allows for reach well beyond the mobile ecosystem. We believe this provides an attractive new channel for selling our existing IoT products.

Qualcomm has big plans for the future. We seek out industry-sized problems and solve them.  IoT plays a leading role in our vision for the 5G world. In acquiring NXP, we aim to establish a leading position in automotive, mobile security, and low-power computing solutions that are critical for consumer and industrial IoT. Together, these specializations can help Qualcomm grow intelligent and broad IoT networks. We’re excited to accelerate the pace of innovation together.

Qualcomm Incorporated includes Qualcomm’s licensing business, QTL, and the vast majority of its patent portfolio. Qualcomm Technologies, Inc., a subsidiary of Qualcomm Incorporated, operates, along with its subsidiaries, substantially all of Qualcomm’s engineering, research and development functions, and substantially all of its products and services businesses, including its semiconductor business, QCT.
